The Emmy Monash Foundation: Sustainable funding for facilities, programs and our future

The Emmy Monash Foundation (EMF) exists to provide sustainable funding for Emmy Monash, its facilities and programs. Supporting the EMF is a gift for your grandchildren.

Emmy Monash was founded over 80 years ago. Our Founders had newborn children and grandchildren in 1941. These “babies” are considering their aged care needs today.
And we will be here for your grandchildren too.
Located at the heart of Melbourne’s Jewish community, our state of the art facility offers independent living, residential aged care and respite services, in a warm and supportive environment. When you choose to make Emmy your home, you have the freedom to plan the next stage of your life, in comfort and with confidence.

History

In 1941, a strong and visionary group of Jewish women established a special place for older members of Melbourne’s Jewish community. These dedicated women, including our founder Emmy Monash, worked around the clock to deliver food and provide care and companionship to the frail and elderly in their own homes while rallying tirelessly for community support.

An important turning point was purchasing an old boarding house on Dandenong Road, Caulfield in 1948. This was pivotal; it allowed our founders to fulfil their underlying dream of creating “A Home away from Home”, for Melbourne’s Jewish seniors. It was only a matter of time before our organisation quickly faced increasing demand and expanded to accommodate more residents
Since then, the provision of aged care has changed significantly over time, shaped by community needs, new technology, government policy and advances in medical knowledge. Evolving to offer respite care and apartment living in addition to residential care, Emmy Monash Aged Care has moved with the times and continually adapted its services and accommodation to deliver the best possible experience, while still preserving the same core values in honour of our inspirational founder.
Emmy Monash was founded as a resource for Jewish elders in need of support over 80 years ago. A lot has changed since then yet one thing has remained the same: Emmy Monash is more than a residence, it is home. It is a place where care and tradition are paramount. Jewish life is a source of comfort; festivals, weekly Shabbot services and kosher food bring reminiscences of yesteryear and connections to the future that are priceless.
Yet these extras do have a price, and that is where the Emmy Monash Foundation endowment plays a role. It exists to ensure in perpetuity that the financial resources needed for our award-winning programs are available. These programs go beyond what state regulations require. There is a significant gap between state funding and the actual cost of aged care nationally, and Emmy Monash raises the bar higher.

There is a significant gap between federal funding and the actual cost of aged care nationally, and Emmy Monash raises the bar higher.

There is a sense of urgency as it is expected that within a decade’s time, the number of
Jewish elders in need of aged care will significantly increase. The demographics speak
for themselves with the arrival of the Baby Boomers into their later years. We must
prepare now to accommodate them.

Emmy Monash board members, volunteers and staff are committed to maintaining a
standard of quality and this is the best way forward, a dedicated endowment.
Government funding is not – and will not – be adequate for the maintenance and
possible expansion of the Emmy Monash facilities and programs in the coming decades.
We have ambitious plans and are laying the groundwork for a major endowment
campaign in the coming years. We need your help.

What is an endowment and how does it work?

Much like a superannuation, the Emmy Monash Foundation is an endowment collected over many years and invested. Annual returns are then spent on programs, lifestyle services, refurbishment, and other expenses. The principal, or corpus, remains whole and grows over time with additional donations. The Emmy Monash Foundation board members oversee this process and work within an ethical and stable investment framework.
